At Ely Log Cabin 4-wheel drive isn't necessary in the summer months, but highly recommended for winter. Please keep in mind that the driveway leading to our off-grid cabin is steep and dirt. We encourage a higher clearance vehicle due to the bumps.
Aurora cabin driveway is pretty flat and 4-wheel drive shouldn't be necessary
Please leave it in your cabin and the cleaner will take it when she cleans. Due to bears we cannot have guests leaving trash outside.
No, we believe the woods is best experienced without TV. However, we do provide a projector at Ely Log Cabin if you’d like to bring your computer and plug it in to project a movie at night.
On a case by case basis. We cannot have more than the maximum guest count at any given time due to parking restrictions and septic limitations. Please reach out to us if you’d like to host an elopement.
At Ely Log Cabin We have a propane fireplace that heats the off-grid cabin. You can adjust the temperature using the thermostat (to the left of the kitchen sink). The fire will automatically turn on and off to keep the cabin at your desired temp. The fireplace can get hot, therefore we don't recommend booking if you have small toddlers.
At Aurora Modern Cabin we have in-floor heat as the primary source. There is a propane fireplace for backup and ambiance.
Yes! We have a hot water on-demand for showers, bathroom & kitchen sinks. The hot water on demand can take a good 15-30 seconds to get warm, so please be patient.
At Ely Log Cabin We have a double burner propane cook top inside the off-grid cabin, as well as a gas grill outside. If you're feeling adventurous you can do your cooking over the outdoor firepit! We provide marshmallow/hot dog roasting sticks.
At Aurora Modern Cabin we have a full stove and oven inside and a propane gas grill outside.
We provide all cooking pots/pans/utensils and even olive oile and basic seasonings.
Our vacation rentals are safest for kids 6+. The stairs to the sleeping lofts are very steep and would require supervision at all times for anyone under the age of 6. Additionally, the fireplace does not have any protection around it and it gets hot. Parents are responsible for bringing anything that they may need for the safety and well being of their children.
Unfortunately, no. We are only covered for the guests on the reservation and cannot allow additional people on our property during your stay. Our septic system has it's limits.
In summer we rent 2 mountain bikes at each cabin. Let us know if you're interested and we will have you pay online and sign a waiver.
In winter we have 2 pairs of snowshoes available at each cabin for your use on our trails!
We are not lakefront, but we are very close to several beautiful lakes with public access. We are just down the road from Rice Bay of Lake Vermilion which has a public boat launch. We are also a few miles from Bear Head Lake State Park with a beautiful public swimming beach. Additionally, we are near Armstrong Lake, which has a public boat launch.
We require a 2 night minimum stay during the off-peak months (November - April) and a 3 or 4 night minimum in the peak season (May - October).

Honestly, not too much! We want your vacation to be as easy as possible, which is why we've equipped our cabins with all the necessities.
You should bring: Anything you need for your kids or dog (kennel, bed)
Firewood: You can buy it on the side of the road (Hwy 169) just south of the cabins or in town at the gas stations
Extra ice: we have a small ice tray in the freezer, but if you need lots you should plan to pick it up
You should leave at home: hair dryers (they overload our solar at Ely Log Cabin), although we do provide one at Aurora
pots and pans, salt and pepper, olive oil, dishes, silverware, dish towels, dish soap, french press coffee maker, locally roasted coffee, tea kettle
bath towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toilet paper, first aid kit, hair dryer (not at Ely Log Cabin due to solar)
Yes! In the event that there is no sun (which can happen for multiple days during the winter in Ely), our backup propane powered generator will turn on automatically to charge up the batteries. During these dark days we ask guests to be mindful of how much electricity they are using to help conserve resources and so that they don't have to hear the generator so often (although it's pretty quiet if you are inside the off-grid cabin with the door closed).
